Military Sealift Command (MSC) - Retrofit of digital controls

Project Overview
GCS has designed a retrofit digital governing control system for the USNS Grapple. The existing engine fuel and speed control system utilized a Woodward 400 control which has been obsolete for years. Connections and tuning pots were worn, as a consequence the control system has become very unreliable and untrustworthy. The existing Woodward EGB-10P actuator and MPU’s for speed sensing were maintained. The retrofit system did not replace the existing pitch control system. The new 828 control system replaced the obsolete 400 controls. Additionally an HMI Operator Panel was installed.

  • Woodward 828 Digital Control with Marine Load Sharing Software
  • HMI to monitor data from all four 828 Governor Controls

.

Control/Customer Benefits
The control provides several functions including speed governing, mechanical load sharing, clutching/declutching control logic, speed matching during clutching, and soft engine loading/unloading. The control uses a master/slave relationship during clutching and load sharing operations. The HMI Operator Touch Screen Panel is a supervisory unit providing the operator the means to monitor engine conditions and select various operation control modes as well as gathering alarms and trend data from each engine
