Upgrade of a barge’s propulsion and generator controls

Project Overview
The reason for the upgrade is to establish loadsharing on the generators and to include torque limiting on the propulsion engines in order to eliminate the high exhaust gas temperatures that occur, due to overloading the engines when the vessel makes a turn or during heavy seas. The chief engineer was interested in any possible solutions that would make the system more automated and reliable. Customer wanted to upgrade to the best available proven Woodward technology.

This control system was designed and implemented on two identical ship sets. Each control system comprises 2 sets of engines. Each engine control unit provides speed and load control, alarm and monitoring of its associated engine generator set.  The control system provides isochronous loadsharing over a redundant LON network.
