Dual fuel generator upgrade at local power station

Project Overview
The goal was to replace obsolete controls and increase ease of operation. The old system required a high degree of maintenance and suffered from poor load sharing capabilities.

The system comprises 2 duel fuel (Diesel and Gas) 7MW Colt Pielstick engine controls. Each engine control unit provides speed and load control, alarm and monitoring of its associated engine generator set.  The control system provides isochronous loadsharing when the utility is open and baseload control when the utility is closed.

Control System Components

  • UG 40 Actuators
  • Atlas SC Digital Controller
  • EGCP-3 Synchronizer and Load Control
  • Basler DECS200 AVR
  • HMI Remote monitoring touchscreen

Control/Customer Benefits
The new system provides full manual and automatic, local and remote control, monitoring and protection. Each engine has a supervisory unit providing the operator the means to monitor engine conditions and select various operation control modes start/stop baseload setpoint entering etc, as well as gathering alarms and trend data from each engine.  A system upgrade was necessary to provide precise engine control and meet the future growth plans of the utility.
