Modernization of obsolete control system

Project Overview
The system in place on the USS Denver was a mechanical governor. A system upgrade was necessary in order to provide precise engine control to meet the needs of the government.
The system was obsolete and required a high degree of maintenance to support the original OEM governing system. The original system was replaced with Woodward 2301D-ST digital steam turbine controls and hydraulic amplifiers.

Control/Customer Benefits
The Woodward 2301D-ST is a microprocessor based control designed to perform the core speed control functions of a small steam turbine generator package. Additional functions such as process control, remote speed/load setpoint or critical speed avoidance logic can be configured if required.
The application software is field configurable, allowing it to be configured and modified to meet site-specific requirements. The 2301D-ST is configured and serviced (dynamic adjustments made) utilizing Woodward Watch Window via a laptop computer connected to the control’s RS-232 communications port.
