Atlas-SC upgrade on single extraction turbine

Project Overview
An Atlas-SC single extraction steam turbine control was custom engineered for 1 off Mitsubishi extraction steam turbine.  The Atlas-SC replaced an obsolete digital Woodward 515 control system and added functionality via customized ModBus interfacing with the DCS system.

• Woodward Atlas-SC Digital Speed Control to control the speed, inlet pressure, extraction pressure  and load of the turbine.

Control/Customer Benefits
The new control system offers increased functionality and is easily configured to meet plant operation changes.  The automatic hot and cold turbine starts with controlled acceleration ramps, warm up times and repeatability provide more reliable starting of the turbine.
The turbine and ancillary equipment are integrated: control, monitoring alarm, shutdown and sequencing functions are rolled into one autonomous package for a cleaner and more defined turbine control system. The success of the first installation led the customer to the decision to install a further turbine, using the identical Atlas-SC steam turbine control Governor Control Systems custom designed to replace the obsolete 515 control system.
