505DE Steam Turbine Control Retrofit

Project Overview
This is a retrofit of an earlier generation Woodward 501 digital control with a current 505DE digital control at co-gen facility at a state university.

The Woodward 505DE Double Extraction Steam Turbine control provides speed and load control, inlet pressure control or inlet pressure limiting with generator kVA limiting. All three valves V1, V2 and V3 are linked through an integral steam map to provide a ratio limiting function. Integrated with the 505DE control system is a Human Machine Interface (HMI) operator panel, designed to provide the operator full control of the turbine with all start / stop and setpoint adjustments available at the control desk.

Control System Components

• Woodward 505DE Speed, Load and Frequency Control, configured to operate in manual, semi-automatic and full automatic loads.
• EGCP-3 provides synchronizing, load sensing, power management and protection functions.
• Protech 203 - provides two out of three overspeed protection for the turbine.
• SPC - Servo Position Controller - provides the interface between the 505DE and Moog servos
• HMI Local Operator Panel – integrates modular controls into one point of operator contact, control and
  system monitoring

Control/Customer Benefits
Complete automation of the turbine and its ancillary equipment integrates all control, power management, monitoring alarm, shutdown and sequencing functions in one autonomous package.   Easily configured to meet plant operation changes, the new control system provides reliable starting of the turbine plus automatic hot and cold turbine starts with controlled acceleration ramps, warm up times and repeatability. Overall, this is a cleaner and more defined turbine control system.
