Retrofit of Four Turbine-Generators on the USS Nashville

Project Overview
This project covered the retrofit of  four DeLaval turbine-generators on the USS Nashville. These four units were converted to Woodward 2301D-ST digital steam turbine controls along with four Woodward TM25 proportional hydraulic actuators.  Additionally, a Woodward SPM-A synchronizer was used on each unit to synchronize its associated generator to the local bus network.

Control System Components:

  • Woodward 2301D-ST digital steam turbine control
  • Woodward TM 25 Actuators
  • Woodward SPM-A Synchronizer

Control/Customer Benefits
The 2301D-ST control provides speed and load control, isochronous load sharing and base loading of the four steam units as well as isochronous load sharing with two other diesel-generators equipped with Woodward load sharing modules. Configuration and service is done via a laptop computer and can be set, tuned, or saved utilizing Woodward’s Watch Window Program. The SPM-A control will perform synchronization and control turbine speed through a bias signal to the 2301D-ST.
