5009 Steam Turbine Control Retrofit

Project Overview
This is a retrofit of an existing speed governing system with a Woodward 5009 TMR control.  The 5009 TMR is a triple modular redundant control system, providing state-of-the-art turbine control.  Integrated into the 5009 control system is a Human Machine Interface (HMI) operator Panel which allows the operators control of the speed/load controllers and provide status and alarm indication of turbine.

Previously, the turbine had an old mechanical speed control and was very unreliable.  
This turbine was the most critical turbine in the process and would cause major problems to production in the event of false or complete failure.  The extremely unreliable and outdated mechanical control system was showing signs
of wear. 

The control system is set up to provide Extraction control when enabled, Megawatt control when coupled to the utility and Frequency control when in island mode.

Control/Customer Benefits
The upgrade of the turbine control system has greatly enhanced the operations and enabled production to continue without unexpected downtime.   The plant now has a very reliable turbine that provides baseload power when coupled to the utility and maintains plant frequency if the utility circuit breaker is open.
