Dual Fuel Generator Upgrade at a Power Station

The goal was to replace obsolete controls and increase ease of operation. The old system required a high degree of maintenance and suffered from poor load sharing capabilities.

The system comprises 2 duel fuel (Diesel and Gas) 7MW Colt Pielstick engine controls. Each engine control unit provides speed and load control, alarm and monitoring of its associated engine generator set.  The control system provides isochronous loadsharing when the utility is open and baseload control when the utility is closed. more

Woodward Atlas-SC

Root Blower System operated on Diesel, Natural Gas, Digester Gas or any combination

This control is used in a triple-fuel Root Blower system where the engine can be operated on Diesel, Natural Gas, Digester Gas or any combination of these 3 fuels.

The 527 control was nearing its life cycle and spares were no longer available, putting the plant at risk. Maintenance of the 527 control modules was high and did not allow for optimum performance. The Atlas-SC controls the speed of the engine by modulating the diesel and gas actuators and the charge air pressure by modulating the waste gate valve when the engine is running on gas fuel. Major Alarms will shut the engine down. Minor alarms will prevent transfer to gas or transfer from gas to diesel if already running on gas.  Full operator control, data display and alarm handling is provided at each engine by an HMI. more

Dual-Fuel Engines – An Old Concept with a New Following

Dual-fuel systems incorporate electronic controls that enhance system performance, representing a viable alternative for diesel engines. more

Single-Point Admission (High Speed Engines)
The control system utilizes a series of sensors and transducers to calculate the optimum diesel-to-gas ratio and position the fuel valve(s).

Multi-Point Admission (Low Speed Engines)
An electronic control drives the individual fuel solenoid valves controlling timing and duration of fuel injection into the cylinder.

Benefits of Dual-Fuel Operation
  • Reduce diesel fuel storage and usage
  • Extend life of existing diesel supply
  • Eliminate costly spark plus maintenance
  • Natural gas is environmentally cleaner than diesel fuel
  • Retrofit systems are quickly installed, minimizing engine downtime
  • Engine maintenance intervals and engine life are extended

Hythane Dual Fuel

Dual Fuel Retrofit Kit Reduces Fuel Costs

An asphalt producer struggling with steadily rising electrical power costs installed a solution that provides a 30% overall reduction in electricity costs and a return on investment in less than one year.

Hythane’s OptiBlend system is a dual fuel retrofit kit, which burns natural gas in place of diesel.  In order to achieve the maximum reduction in diesel fuel usage, and to maintain the safety and durability of the engine, constant control of the gas is maintained with a PLC controller and a dynamic air/fuel ratio throttle.  The engine now delivers the same performance as it would if it was running on 100% diesel fuel but with reduced emissions. more
